Why ‘real’ conferencing is still popular in the digital age.

With the rise of digital technology, social media and virtual conferencing software it’s no wonder we question why in-person communication is still important. When organising a conference it’s now natural to sum up the pro’s and con’s of holding your event virtually or in the ‘real’ world, but why is that in-person conferences often win out? Here’s a few reasons that in-person conferencing is still popular in the technological era:

Getting connected – Networking and meeting new people is one of the most exciting aspects of conferencing in person. You can completely engage with fellow delegates without the barrier of a web or phone interface and easily exchange details without interrupting others conference experience.

In person conferences allow opportunities for meeting new potential employees, collaborators, new colleagues and other like minded people. Some conferences even include dedicated networking sessions to allow time dedicated to making new contacts. You can always make a better impression when you have the chance to meet someone in person rather than over the phone or through the internet.

Engagement – Holding a in-person conference is the only true way to engage with delegates on every level. Setting the atmosphere with a comfortable venue and amenities allows people to focus on the task in hand and really listen to discussions without distraction. It’s a lot easier to engaged with talks and debates when you are within the right environment. Virtual conferencing leaves chance for easy distraction – an incoming call or a problem in the office for example.

Spontaneity – When involved in a virtual conference it’s quite difficult to change your plans and try something new. Within an in-person conference scenario it’s a lot easier to be spontaneous and sit in on speeches that interest you at the last minute. Delegates are often encouraged to think on new areas and ideas when attending ‘real’ conference. Where as, a virtual conference set-up can mean delegates only take part to focus on a specific areas or idea that they feel is important. It doesn’t leave room for changing your mind and trying something new as well!
